Meet Hugo, a furry robot built to hug people at theme parks

Cambridge startup Dynamic Creatures showed a video of its prototype mascot robot. For now, a person controls it remotely.

Most humanoid robots are built for factories and warehouses. Hugo is built for hugs. On October 13, 2026, Cambridge, Massachusetts, startup Dynamic Creatures released a video of Hugo, a big-eyed, furry robot, walking around its office. The Boston Globe's Hiawatha Bray reported the story.

What the video shows

The Globe reports the video shows Hugo high-fiving engineers and hugging children. The company wants robots like Hugo to work in theme parks, hotels and stores. The Globe compares it to a team mascot, but with a robot inside the costume.

A person is still in control

Here is the important part. The Globe reports the Hugo in the video is a prototype being teleoperated, meaning a person is steering it remotely. The Globe says the system can't yet be trusted to touch people on its own.

The company says it plans to use AI so Hugo can find its way around new places on its own, and that it is building software so Hugo can answer questions in real time. Those are plans.

Who is behind it

CEO Marc Theermann is the former chief strategy officer at Boston Dynamics, the maker of the Atlas humanoid and the Spot robot dog. The Globe reports Dynamic Creatures has partnered with Boston Dynamics and uses much of its technology.

Theermann told the Globe he is "100 percent certain" we will all have a robot at home within 10 years. His bet is that cute, cuddly robots will help people get comfortable with them. That is a prediction, not a product.

What you can do

There is no Hugo to visit yet. The company has not announced a park, hotel or date. For now, the video is the thing to watch.
